Most marketing teams spend 60–70% of their social media time on tasks a well-configured automation can handle in milliseconds: scheduling posts, triaging DMs, hiding spam comments, flagging brand mentions that need a human response. Social media automation isn’t about replacing your community manager — it’s about giving them back the hours they’re burning on work that doesn’t require judgment.

This article walks through a production-ready architecture for automating three core workflows: scheduling and publishing content, generating and routing comment replies, and moderating spam at scale. We’ll use n8n as the orchestration layer and Claude as the reasoning engine. I’ll show you where this breaks, what it costs, and where you genuinely need a human in the loop.

What’s Worth Automating (and What Isn’t)

Before touching code, get clear on which tasks are rule-based versus judgment-based. Rule-based tasks are safe to fully automate. Judgment-based tasks need an AI assist plus a human approval step.

  • Safe to fully automate: Publishing pre-approved posts on a schedule, hiding comments containing slurs or spam keywords, auto-liking replies from verified partners, sending first-touch DM responses with an FAQ link
  • Needs human review: Responding to complaints, handling PR-sensitive mentions, anything that involves a refund or escalation, any reply that could be screenshot and misrepresented
  • Don’t automate: Crisis communication, anything touching legal or compliance, personalized outreach to high-value accounts

The failure mode I see most often is teams automating too aggressively and then getting a viral screenshot of their bot replying to a grief post with a promotional message. The fix isn’t to automate less — it’s to build better routing logic upfront.

The Architecture: n8n + Claude + Social APIs

The stack looks like this: n8n handles scheduling, webhook ingestion, and API calls to the social platforms. Claude handles all text classification and generation. A simple Postgres table tracks post state and moderation decisions.

You’ll need API access for whichever platforms you’re targeting. Twitter/X’s API tiers matter here — the Basic tier ($100/month) gives you 100 posts/month and read access, which is enough for a small team. If you’re managing multiple brand accounts at scale, you’ll likely need the Pro tier. Meta’s Graph API is free for publishing but requires app review for some permissions. Plan for 2–3 weeks of review time if you’re building for a client.

n8n Workflow Structure

I structure social automation in n8n as three separate workflows rather than one monolithic flow. It’s easier to debug, and you can trigger them independently.

  1. Publisher workflow: Cron-triggered, reads from a content queue, formats per-platform, posts, logs the result
  2. Inbox workflow: Webhook or polling-triggered, ingests new comments/DMs, classifies them, routes to Claude for draft replies or to a human queue
  3. Moderation workflow: Runs on a short interval (every 5–15 minutes), scans new comments against a ruleset, takes action

Building the Content Publishing Workflow

The content queue is just a database table. I use Postgres with columns for platform, content, media_url, scheduled_at, status, and posted_at. Notion or Airtable work too if your team prefers a visual interface — n8n connects to both natively.

The n8n publisher workflow runs every 5 minutes. It queries for rows where scheduled_at <= NOW() and status = 'pending', then routes each to the appropriate platform node. Here’s the core query node expression:

After posting, update the row with the returned post ID and set status to posted. If the API call fails, set status to failed and log the error — don’t silently drop it. I add a Slack notification node on failure so the team knows immediately rather than discovering a post went missing three days later.

Automating Comment Responses Without Sounding Like a Bot

This is where Claude earns its place. The goal isn’t to have the AI respond to everything — it’s to draft replies fast enough that a human can approve and send within minutes rather than hours.

Classification First, Generation Second

Run every incoming comment through a classifier before touching a generation model. This saves money and catches edge cases early. A simple Claude Haiku call for classification costs roughly $0.0003 per comment — you can process thousands per dollar.

Route SPAM directly to a hide/delete action. Route SENSITIVE immediately to a human queue with high priority. Route COMPLAINT to a human queue with medium priority — don’t let Claude draft complaint responses autonomously. For POSITIVE_GENERAL and QUESTION_PRODUCT, generate a draft reply.

Generating Draft Replies That Don’t Sound Robotic

The single biggest mistake in AI-generated social replies is using the same system prompt for every brand. A DTC skincare brand and a B2B SaaS company have completely different voice requirements. Invest time in your system prompt — it’s the lever that controls quality at scale.

I use Haiku for classification and Sonnet for generation. The cost difference is meaningful at scale: Haiku runs at $0.25/million input tokens, Sonnet at $3/million. For a brand getting 500 comments/day, that’s roughly $0.04/day for classification and $0.45/day for generating drafts on the ~30% that qualify. Under $20/month total. Compare that to one hour of community manager time.

Spam Moderation at Scale

Don’t use an LLM as your first line of spam defense — it’s overkill and adds latency. Use a keyword/regex filter first, then escalate ambiguous cases to Claude.

Set the confidence threshold conservatively (0.85+) for auto-hiding. False positives — hiding a legitimate comment — are worse for brand trust than a few spam comments slipping through. Log every moderation action so you can audit and tune the system.

What Actually Breaks in Production

Rate limits will surprise you. Meta’s Graph API has per-app and per-user rate limits that aren’t clearly documented. Build exponential backoff into every API call and queue posts rather than firing them all at once.

OAuth token expiry is a silent killer. Long-lived tokens still expire. Build a token refresh check into your workflow startup and alert immediately if a token refresh fails — you’ll wake up to a queue of unposted content otherwise.

Platform API changes break things without warning. Twitter/X has changed its API terms and endpoints multiple times in 18 months. Pin your API client versions and subscribe to the platform’s developer changelog. n8n’s built-in nodes lag behind API changes by weeks sometimes — be ready to write custom HTTP request nodes.

Claude’s output format isn’t always valid JSON. Even with explicit JSON-only instructions, Haiku occasionally wraps output in markdown code fences. Add a parse wrapper that strips ```json blocks before parsing. Don’t assume clean output.

When to Use This vs. Off-the-Shelf Tools

Buffer, Sprout Social, and Hootsuite all have automation features. Use them if you’re a non-technical team managing under 5 accounts with standard scheduling needs — the setup time for a custom n8n workflow isn’t worth it.

Build your own when: you need custom AI-driven routing logic, you’re managing 10+ accounts across a marketing agency, you need to integrate social data with your CRM or internal tools, or the per-seat pricing of managed tools exceeds your custom build cost. At roughly $200–400/month for a n8n cloud instance and API costs, the break-even against Sprout Social’s Advanced tier ($249/user/month) is fast.

Solo founders: Start with Buffer for scheduling and a simple n8n webhook flow for comment triage. Don’t over-engineer early.

Marketing agencies: The custom build pays off at 8+ client accounts. Build a multi-tenant version with per-client brand voice configs stored in your database.

Enterprise teams: You’ll likely need a human-in-the-loop approval interface on top of this — a simple Next.js app that surfaces Claude’s drafts for one-click approval is 2–3 days of work and dramatically increases reply speed without removing oversight.

The goal of solid social media automation is a marketing team that responds faster, moderates consistently, and spends their actual creative energy on content that moves the needle — not on hiding spam at 11pm.
